What is Anal Fistula
An Anal Fistula is a the small channel with an internal opening in anal canal & external opening in the skin near the anus. Anal Fistula is common among those who had anal abscess earlier. An anal abscess is termed as infected cavity filled with pus. Anal Fistula form when an anal abscess is drained and doesn't heal in a proper way.
Types of Anal Fistula:-

Intersphincteric fistula
The channel/tract starts between the internal and external sphincter muscles and opens very close to anal opening.
Transphincteric fistula
The channel/tract starts in the space between the internal and external sphincter muscles or in the space behind the anus.It crosses the external sphincter and opens outside the anal opening
Suprasphincteric fistula
The channel/tract starts in the gap between internal and external sphincter muscles and turns upward to puborectal muscle and then extends downward between the puborectal and levator ani muscle.
Extrasphincteric fistula
The channel/tract starts at the rectum and extends downward through levator ani muscle and opens around the anus
Symptoms of Anal Fistula

Diagnosis of Anal Fistula
Locating external anal fistula is easy as the external opening is usually red, inflamed, leaks pus and mixed with blood. Whereas finding the internal opening of Anal Fistula can be more challenging as it requires some tools to diagnose the same. The most Common yet popular Techniques are:-
